Jane Austen's Brother, Edward - Art & Accomplishments

Jane Austen’s 3rd brother Edward (1767 – 1852) was adopted in 1783 by his father’s cousins Thomas & Catherine Knight who were rich and childless. He was to inherit three country estates and having not been brough up in wealth and luxury, the Knights paid for Edward to undertake two Grand Tours to the Continent to acquire polish and sophistication. In 1786, when he was 18, he visited Switzerland and in 1790 to Italy, Switzerland, Germany and The Netherlands. This talk will explore where he went, how he travelled, who he met and most importantly the art and cultural sights that he saw.

Our presenter, Anne Harbers, has been a member of JASA for over 30 years. As an art historian, she has presented on paintings, Decorative arts such as silver and art and dress in the time of Jane Austen.

Anne received her M. Art History from University of Sydney in 2014 and spends her time between Sydney and the Netherlands whilst working on her PhD on the 17th century Dutch painter, Abraham van Beyeren. She also holds an MBA & Masters research degree in science and worked for 30 years in medical research & international business. She currently works as a University lecturer within a Business faculty. Her current art history research interests lie in Dutch 17th century art, and 17th to 19th century European Art & Decorative Arts. She has published on collecting, art and science.
