Pride and Prejudice on Screen

  • 23 Victoria Street Clayfield Qld 4011 Australia (map)

Dr Victoria Bladen has kindly agreed to be our guest speaker again and her talk in February 2021 'Persuasion on Screen' was very popular with members. Dr Bladen is presenting 'Pride and Prejudice on Screen'. The presentation will be exploring aspects of the afterlives of Austen on screen, considering some of the questions raised by the process of adaptation. We will consider three adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and think about the different ways they have approached the novel.

Films that will be discussed during this talk. You may wish to watch or re-watch these prior to the meeting:

  • Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Directed by Simon Langton, performances by Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, BBC, 1995.

  • Pride and Prejudice. Directed by Joe Wright, performances by Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, Universal Pictures, 2005.

  • Bride and Prejudice. Directed by Gurinder Chadha, performances by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Martin Henderson, Pathé Pictures International, 2004.

Following the talk, Dr Bladen will hold a Q&A session. We will then have a lively and fun debate on the topic 'Which P&P is best? 1995 or 2005?'. Attendees will be asked to decide the winner of the debate.
