On 17 August 2024 we revisit Austen’s original text with a ‘Pride and Prejudice’ study afternoon. The committee has organised a guest speaker, Steve Rohan-Jones, who will guide us through a pleasant afternoon in an interactive way writing letters to our acquaintances and partaking in parlour games to deepen our understanding of 'Pride and Prejudice'.
Steve requests you bring the following items with you to participate in the activities:
The novel
A quill (pen or pencil)
Your imagination!
Steve is a peripatetic Shakespeare and literary classics scholar. He has recently returned from Shakespeare Summer School in Sardegna (Italy) where, as a PhD student, he performed ‘Whereof what’s Past is Prologue: Time and Origin Stories in The Tempest’ combining Prospero, quantum physics and the shapes of time. Last year, Steve delivered ‘Violence of affection’ examining civility, love and war through the love quartets in Midsummer Night’s Dream (Theseus/Hippolyta, Lysander/Hermia, Demetrius/Helena, Oberon/Titania) and Pride and Prejudice (Darcy/Elizabeth, Mr Bingley/Jane, Lydia/Wickham, Charlotte/Mr Collins).
Colouring Competition
If you took a page to colour at our last meeting, please remember to bring your artistic efforts with you to the Study Afternoon. There will be prizes awarded to our best artists and your works are likely to be as much admired as Elizabeth Bennet's fine eyes.
If you are able to assist with setting up the chairs in the hall your help would be appreciated. Please arrive slightly early to assist if you can. Afternoon tea will be provided and contributions are most welcome.
Thank you
