Miss Bennet's Jig - Dancing in Jane Austen's world

Dance historian, Dr Heather Clarke will explore the significance of the gentle art, and its importance in Jane Austen's life and writing. Why does dancing play a such key role in many of Jane's novels? And why does it continue to fascinate dancers around the world today? These questions and more will be answered in this absorbing presentation.

Dr Heather Clarke is a cultural historian specialising in 18th & 19th century dance in Britain and colonial Australia. Her academic research concentrates on the context of dance in society both for the elite and for those in the 'lower orders'. At a practical level, Heather's experience includes historical dance as well as classical ballet and folk traditions; she runs regular dances in Samford and an annual Jane Austen Ball. Heather has been awarded six research scholarships at national and international levels, frequently presents workshops, and regularly publishes journal articles and updates on her website www.colonialdance.com.au
